ROV Pilot Experience: 400hrs+ Pilotting, 2000hrs+ Support

Marine/Survey Technician with over a decade’s experience supporting global oceanographic and hydrographic operations for both government and non-goverment organisations.

In this capacity I have supported over 95 expeditions (~1900 days) from the edge of the ice sheets to the tropics. My experiences includes integrating, operating and maintaining cutting edge AUV/ROV/UAV technology and core oceanographic tools such as multibeam, ADCP’s, CTD, Nets and coring

Since 2011 I have been involved in the setup and operational maturing of Schmidt Ocean Institute and global research vessel R/V Falkor for American billionaires Eric and Wendy Schmidt.

During 2011-2012 I was involved in the conversion of an ex-German fisheries protection vessel (Seefalke) into a research vessel (Falkor) with emphasis on high quality multibeam mapping and science acoustic systems. During this conversion I was responsible for overseeing the outfitting and acceptance of scientific, survey and lab facilities.

For the last 4 years I have been supporting numerous multi-disciplinary expeditions as the Lead marine Technician/Cruise Cordinator onboard RV Falkor in the Atlantic, Pacific, South China Sea and the Philipene Sea.

Personal Interests

I am a keen polar historian and member of the Captain Scott Society. In July 2012 I was in charge of a successful attempt to find the wreck of the polar exploration vessel Terra Nova which sank off Greenland in 1943. Using my multibeam experience and substantial research we were able to pinpoint the previously undiscovered wreck. To prove that we had found the correct wreck, I constructed a towed camera array which was used to verify the find. I am currently writing a book on the survey and my research.
